About us
Archaeosnack is an international writing group of archaeologists who share a passion for outreach and work to improve their writing and science communication skills. We value good communication and collaboration, and we ensure that all interactions take place in a friendly and supportive environment.
Our aims
Outreach
We engage archaeologists in communicating effectively and widely research-based archaeology to non-expert audiences through digestible little reads (snacks).
Community
We strive to enhance communication between the international community particularly of early career archaeologists, and to bring archaeological research closer to the public.
Education
In the process, Archaeosnack authors learn important writing and feedback skills that, in turn, improve their scientific writing too.
The writing process

The Archaeosnack writing process
01
We start with a round of new ideas for future snacks.
02
One of the authors presents their work either at an early stage (structure) or after reworking (draft).
03
The group discusses the presented work and provides feedback. At the end of each meeting, we decide what will be presented and discussed in the following one.
04
Once a snack is completed, we share it on our Read page.
Our writing group meets online, every three weeks on Mondays at 13:30 GMT (London time). Meetings last between 1 and 1.5 hours. See our calendar for the meeting schedule for this year.
We prioritise the learning process based on peer-feedback through which authors enhance their writing skills for addressing non-expert audiences. The acquisition of new writing skills happens through iterations of feedback and revisions. This interactive learning process in the context of our international group allows researchers to become aware of relevant research beyond their immediate field around the globe.
We adopt the RECITe writing approach: REpetition, Continuity, Interaction and Triumph. We ensure repetition and continuity through regular meetings, where we interact and exchange feedback. We triumph by enhancing our writing skills, promoting science communication in archaeology, and helping early career researchers to overcome any hesitation in opening up to constructive feedback and public exposure.
The Archaeosnack writing group was founded by Vana Orfanou in 2020 as part of Scisnack, a science communication platform created by Mathew Stiller-Reeve in 2012 while he was a PhD candidate at University of Bergen. Since 2025, Archaeosnack has its own website.
We hope you like it!
